NEET Must Apply for AYUSH Courses

The NEET is all out in springing in surprises. After the age limit and open school controversies, NEET is all out for the alternative medicine field as well.

Now all the seats for admission to the AYUSH colleges – both private and Government- across India shall be covered by the NEET exam. The selection, admissions used to be done through single-window counselling by the selection committee at the Department of Indian Medicine based on Class XII marks so far. 

Now as per the notification by authorities of AYUSH ( Ayurveda, Yoga, and natural sciences, Unani, Siddha or Homeopathy courses ) should clear NEET exam for admission The NEET is being conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education on May 6.  The step is taken to ensure the quality of students aspiring for the medical field. The cutoff   will be decided after the results are declared. 

All states are to strictly follow the admission of students in AYUSH-UG courses as prescribed shall be by NEET from the academic year .

Central Council of Indian Medicine member (CCIM- state representative for Siddha) has taken compliance with the new rule.   Even though CCIM believes this will improve quality of students and a drop in the number of students aspiring to join Indian medicine at last for the next year is likely.  The insistence on knowledge of Tamil may hinder many applicants. They have to write 14-18 line poems in Tamil.

As the new rules come to force candidates aspiring for seats in AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy) courses will have to appear for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) and in turn meet national level competition. Earlier the competition was restricted to state level only.

As NEET would be the single entrance test for AYUSH courses as well (besides medical and dental), the state level entrance exams have no relevance.

Incidentally, persons of Indian Origin and Overseas Citizen of India have not been allowed to appear for CET so far. The new rule makes them eligible.Until now NEET was mandatory only for a medical/dental seat in the state;  the state authorities have updated their decision and put up online application suitably.

From now onwards all under-graduate aspirants who applied for AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy) courses should qualify in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) . So far different states had their qualification so are (For Example Karnataka Examination authority, KEA, CET etc.). Tamilnadu wanted exemption from NEET last year, but Supreme Court rejected the plea.

As such therewill not be any NRI or management quota in Ayush courses hereafter. All the seats will be filled up by the state governments considering only NEET rankings. Ministry of AYUSH informed all those who are concerned that from academic year  all undergraduate seats of AYUSH degrees namely, BAMS, BHMS, BUMS, BSMS and BNYA shall be filled considering the merit list of NEET only.
