Want to study medicine abroad? Crack the NEET first!
The new rule is stipulated by the CBSE on eligibility for the candidate who wants to pursue medical education abroad. All such aspirants of Indian origin need to clear National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), in case they want to pursue medical courses abroad.
This is a clear deviation from the earlier rule. Previously those who have cleared Foreign Medical Graduates Screening Exam (FMGE) were enough to pursue medical education as well as to practice outside the country. But from now onwards, they will have to clear the NEET exam as well for pursuing medical courses abroad.
Recommendation of MCI (Medical Council of India)
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has accepted the recommendation by the MCI (Medical Council of India) in implementing this revised rule. As per amended India’s Screening Test Regulations (2002) “ any Indian citizen or Indian citizen overseas, who wants to obtain a primary medical qualification, from any medical university outside India on or after May 2018 shall now have to compulsorily clear NEET exam”. The main reason is that the medical institutions of foreign countries admit Indian students without proper assessment or screening of the students academic ability to cope up with the medical education. Due to this laxity, many students do not qualify the screening test. This is highly embarrassing for Indian Government, the foreign University as well as for the candidates.
The notification further clarified that those candidates who have passed Class X11 – both open and private schools- could not appear for NEET-UG. A NOC (No Objection Certificate) is a must for them to study medicine in Institutions outside India after clearing NEET.
Responses for and against
However, the reaction to this revised norm is chequered and as expected. For some, the rule puts every candidate in par. But some feels that this rule deprived their dream of getting a foreign medical degree. But the general feeling is that merit is playing a major role in the money power. As a consequence, the number of Indian students going abroad for medical education is bound to drop substantially.
The new rule of making the NEET mandatory will comes to force for the admission on or after May 2018. Now the quality of students going abroad for medical examination would be better academically. The amendment is to the rule of the eligibility criteria for admission to the MBBS course prescribed in the Regulations on Graduate Medical Education, 1997.
Uphill task for many
Nevertheless cracking the NEET is not all that easy. Also, those students who wanted to pursue their medical education have to work hard as per the revision of rules in February this year. However, for those who clear the NEET is not an automatic entry to the medical education field in other countries, for example, many countries insist on exams like GATE. Also unlike in India, only graduates can apply for medical schools in the USA.
A brake at last
Now a brake is being applied to students going abroad for medical schools to China, Russia, Georgia, Philippines etc. the statistics are alarming- only one-fifth of the candidate who appeared for FGM qualified the exam in 2014-15. On an average, 7,000 students go outside India to study medicine every year. This step will stop illegal medical degrees as well as quackery.
In the course of last five years, the number of foreign medical graduates those who have cleared the FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduate Screening Exam) was increased from 13.09 to 26.9 per cent. Therefore the new rule is a part of improving the performance and academic ability of students going abroad for pursuing medical education.

All NEET aspirants want to study hard and ace the NEET test, we give our 100% but when it comes to the NEET faculty or NEET experts who are supposed to teach you further, is not qualified enough?
