The Supreme Court of India has made it compulsory for all the medical colleges to admit the students on the basis of the percentile scored by the students in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).
- The class XII marks scored by the students will no longer play a significant role for any medical aspirant’s rank in the merit list of the medical colleges.
- However, according to the officials of the State Health Department, the students should have scored at least 50% marks in their class XII board examinations.
- The officials of the State Health department have also mentioned that unless there is any intervention form the Central Government, the admission in the medical colleges from this year will be solely done on the basis of the score secured through the NEET examination.
- The officials have also hinted that the CBSE would also start the procedure of sending the separate list of the students who have cleared the NEET examination to the state which will enable them to fill up their quota in various universities.
Who is against the NEET?
- The Health Minister of Gujarat, Mr. Nitin Patel along with the Education Minister, Bhupendrasinh Chudasama, has decided to come to Delhi to request the Union Minister for his intervention in the NEET for not making it mandatory at least for this year.
- The government of Gujarat is also thinking of conducting NEET exam in Gujarati.
- The State Government is also planning to request the Central Government to lower down the cut off criteria for the students appearing for the medical examinations.
Although, the Supreme Court of India has made it compulsory for all the medical colleges to admit the students on the merit basis who clear the NEET examination. But, still there are many students who are eligible for the admission but will not be able to make it to the top medical colleges because of the exorbitant fee charged by them.
As a result, these colleges are now taking this fact to their advantage by admitting only those students who can pay their increased fee which is quite high. Hence, any student joining the MBBS course this year will now be required to pay a heavy fee of at least Rs.80 lakh for the four and a half year course irrespective of the capitation fee which is an additional amount to be paid illegally.
According to Dr. GN Ravindranath, Head of Doctor’s Association for Social Equality, it is very important to come out with the merit list of the students who qualify the NEET Exam in order to stop these colleges from charging the high capitation fee. Seats should be allotted to only those students who pass this exam on the merit basis rather than to those who can afford the high fee of the colleges. The admission of the students in the government medical colleges are done through a transparent system. Thus, according to him, introducing the NEET exam in the government medical colleges is not a right thing to do.
