Medical Admission NRI Quota Explained

The 15% (All India Quota) AIQ, 85% state quotas, the private and Deemed Universities are the main types of MBBS seats in India for the NRI students. NRI students are all applicable in 15% (All India Quota) AIQ if he/she satisfies the criteria for (All India Quota) AIQ, and the same in the 85% state quota. Apart from these, MCI has reserved 15% of seats in many colleges just for the NRI students. In case, you don’t know OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) and PIO (Person of Indian Origin) are also included in the NRI quota. To clear this confusion we have attached a video below:

    

What is All India Quota (AIQ)?

All the government medical and dental colleges have 15% reserved seats for those students that satisfied AIQ cut-off set by the Medical Council of India MCI. All students are eligible for this quota if they satisfy the required cut-off, whether they are Indian students or NRIs.

MBBS NRI QUOTA (AIQ) SEATS DISTRIBUTION & BREAKUP

NRI Quota or we call it AIQ (All India Quota): This is the only option and opportunity for NRI students to get admission into. NRI students cannot take admission other than these seats as far as the AIQ is your priority and as far as you are planning to get into government medical colleges in India. 

Remaining 85% seats altogether in India will be reserved for India students and some of the percentage goes to reserved category students like OBC, SC or ST etc. NRI students cannot get admission under these 85% seats in India.

What is State Quota?

The remaining 85% of the quotas are taken care of by the state. The students can take admission under their respective states. And the cut-off will be announced by the state, not by the MCI.  

What is NRI Quota in NEET?

Yes, NRI students can write NEET entrance exam, provided they fulfill all the eligibility criteria like age limit, appearance and performance in Grade XII (or equivalent) examination, required subjects, etc.

There is no NRI quota in NEET exam but candidates can apply in NRI category if they are eligible. There is an NRI quota in some government/ private medical colleges/ deemed universities for NEET-UG qualified candidates.

Can NRI Apply for Management Quota in MBBS

The N.R.I. quota includes Overseas Citizens of India (O.C.I.), Persons of Indian Origin (P.O.I.), and non-OCI foreign nationals. N.R.I. students have the flexibility to apply for both N.R.I. and management reserved seats. On the other hand, O.C.I., P.O.I., and non-OCI foreign nationals are exclusively eligible for N.R.I. quota medical admissions. To secure a spot in MBBS programs under the N.R.I. quota, all N.R.I. candidates must successfully pass the NEET exam.

Who falls under AIQ (NRI Quota)?

1. A person who is an Indian origin and settled in foreign countries.

2. A person who was born abroad but the parents are of Indian origin.

3. Those Indians who are staying abroad for any purpose like employment and business are also counted as NRIs.

4. Students who live outside India for 5 years and did 9,10,11, and 12th standard from abroad will count as NRI candidates.  

5. Candidates who are children of State/ Central Government staff who are staying abroad on deputation amount are thought-about as NRI.

Who is Eligible for AIQ (NRI Quota)?

A candidate is eligible for the NRI quota if he/she meets the following conditions:

1.  Applicants must clear the NEET exam.

2. Applicants must have a valid passport.

3. Candidate applying under NRI sponsorship must be sponsored by first degree relative of the students. (Siblings / Parents)

4. International Baccalaureate (IB) Curriculum:

• International students who have completed the IB curriculum need to have Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English as core subjects in their 11th and 12th grade. (You have the option to select only 2 sciences as per your curriculum?

• They should have obtained a minimum of 50% aggregate marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology/Biotechnology taken together. This applies to General category students.

• For SC/ST/OBC category students, the minimum aggregate required is 40%.

• They must also meet the age criteria, which is a minimum of 17 years and a maximum of 25 years (with a relaxation of 5 years for reserved categories).

5. A/AS Level or Equivalent Curriculum:

• International students who have completed A/AS Level or an equivalent curriculum must have studied Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English as core subjects.

• They should have obtained a minimum of 50% aggregate marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology taken together for General category students. For SC/ST/OBC category students, the minimum required is 40%.

• The age limit for eligibility is a minimum of 17 years and a maximum of 25 years (with a relaxation of 5 years for reserved categories).

6. American High School Diploma or Equivalent:

• Students who have completed the American High School Diploma or an equivalent curriculum need to have studied Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English as core subjects.

• They should have obtained a minimum of 50% aggregate marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology taken together for General category students. For SC/ST/OBC category students, the minimum required is 40%.

• The age limit for eligibility is a minimum of 17 years and a maximum of 25 years (with a relaxation of 5 years for reserved categories).

Documents Required for AIQ (NRI Quota)

N.R.I. category:

1. The NEET rank card is required.
2. A qualifying examination marks memo is necessary.
3. If the candidate studied abroad, an equivalent certificate from a recognized board in India is needed.
4. Proof of DOB and place of birth is required.
5. A school or college leaving certificate (transfer certificate) from the last institution studied is necessary.
6. A study certificate from VI class to intermediate/equivalent is required.
7. The candidate's citizenship status (N.R.I. Citizenship/Residence or equivalent) must be provided.

Documents to be furnished by N.R.I. parent:

1. A recent N.R.I. status certificate of the parent issued by the respective embassy, bearing their seal, or an OCI/PIO/Permanent citizenship certificate from the competent authority is required.
2. A copy of the N.R.I. bank account statement for the last six months must be provided.
3. An employment certificate of the N.R.I. parent is necessary. In the case of self-employment, the nature of the business, annual income, and supporting proof must be furnished, along with a copy of the income tax returns filed for the previous financial year.
4. A passport with a valid visa is required.
