Bordering Delhi, the CITY created out of farmlands in the 1990s is one of the hubs of IT and outsourcing, giving it the name of 'Millennium CITY'
Gurgaon, often known as the melting point of multinational company offices, is now significantly growing as an education hub as well.
Regarding engineering, the region seems to offer a complete ecosystem for the students, due to the close proximity with industry. India offices of some of the world’s best-known companies like Microsoft Corp.; Google Inc. Ericsson and agribusiness giant Cargill Inc., operate from here.
"If somebody is preparing to do higher studies, say MBA, the CITY has huge number of quality coaching centers.
Moreover, since Gurgaon has a corporate flavor, that gives us more exposure and idea of the industry. We also have good access to industry on a regular basis" I said Shiva Sharma, Engineering student of Dronacharya College of Engineering.
One can find an array of engineering colleges in Gurgaon, like ITM University; Amity University, Ansal Institute of Technology; Dronacharya Government College; Apeejay College of Engineering; Institute of Technology and Management; Guru Gram Institute of Aeronautical Engineering ' & Technology; Kamrah Institute of Information Technology (KII'I) – to name some. Gurgaon is also home to one of India's top-ranked business school, Management Development Institute (MDI).

Distance 32 Km. south-west of New Delhi
Climate Summer up to 450C, winter up to 02.200C
Journey time by road 30 to 40 minutes from New Delhi.
Metro and buses are the preferred transport in Gurgaon by students, while some choose to drive on their own. Metro stations dot Huda CITY Centre, IFFCO Chowk, MG Road, Sikanderpur and Guru Droncharya and six stations operated by Rapid Metro: Sikandarpur, Phase 2, Vodafone Belvedere Towers, IndusInd Bank Cyber CITY, Micromax Moulsari Avenue, Shankar Chowk, Gateway tower, and Phase3.Tickets cost anywhere from Rs.8 to Rs. 30.
The CITY's railway station is part of the larger Indian railways network, connecting Gurgaon to Delhi and other important cities.
Gurgaon bus terminal, run by Haryana Roadways, is a busy station that provides connectivity to the cities in Haryana and neighboring states like UP and Rajasthan.
Gurgaon is just a few kilometers away from Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport that provides domestic and international connectivity.
Students in Gurgaon get good industrial exposure owing to the fact that Delhi NCR is catching up with the country's Silicon Valley, Bangalore, to become the new start-up destination.
Thus, Engineering students have a large number of internships/summer jobs to join or get part-time jobs in these start-ups and become job-ready.
Even if most of the Gurgaon colleges offer college hostels, many students prefer to stay on their own. And for those, right from service apartments to government hostels or paying guest (PG) accommodations are available.
Apart from PGs and hostels, a large number of families in and around Gurgaon also give rooms on rent.
Areas that provide housing facilities are usually near the institutions. Some of the areas where students can get good accommodation are DLF Phase 2, 3, & 4, IFFCO Chowk, Sector 30, 40, 46, Udyog Vihar, Civil Lines, LIG Colony, Bhim Nagar, etc.
Being a premium locality of Haryana, Gurgaon is not a cheap place to live in. The cost of living index is more or less equal to the National capital-Delhi. A2-BHK costs around Rs 9,000 to Rs 12000, depending on the amenities offered.
The PGs and hostels charge anywhere between Rs 3,000 – 8,000 per room, shared by two. Food is also included usually fixed menu.
Since many of the institutes are located at a distance from the main CITY, students generally use two-wheelers that add to the expenses. If a student is living on his/her own, then monthly expense anywhere lies between Rs. 8000 and Rs.10,000.
“My expenditure is not more than Rs. 10,000 per month, which includes living in an independent flat with four more friends, rent, food, car, domestic help, partying etc, "said Shiva.
Gurgaon is a youth-dominated region, and there is no scarCITY of food options, suiting all pocket sizes. For those who live in a flat and PG with a few friends or alone, the food is available 24*7 and the CITY has tiffin service in abundance.
The cuisine is 'north Indian and on the heavier Side, like Tandoori Roti, Chicken Masala or Paneer Masala.
Gurgaon is dotted with a number of dhabas, on highways as well as in the CITY. popular food items amongst students are chowmein, momos, rolls, gol-gappe, kababs, tikkas, even idll-dosa etc.
Some popular places for students are Pappu Fish Corner (New Colony, Old Gurgaon): Qureshi's Kabab Corner, Arjun Marg, DLF Phase-I; Gulab: Scottish Mall, Sohna Road; Jodhpur Vala: SCO 5, Ground Floor, Near Payal Cinema, Sector 14; Bikanerwala: 3/5, CITY Center, Near Leisure Valley Park, Sector 29; Mr. Momo: 36, sector-11, and so-on- and-so-forth.

Proximity to Delhi and Gurgaon coupled with a comparatively low cost of living make Faridabad an attractive destination for Engineering students.
Located in Haryana, Faridabad shares its boundaries with Delhi to its north, Gurgaon to the west, and Uttar Pradesh to its east and south.
The largest CITY of Haryana, Faridabad has a mix of residential and industrial areas.
Faridabad is also known as a major industrial hub of Haryana and is popular for tractors, motorcycles, switch gears, refrigerators, shoes and tires etc. Faridabad alone generates about 50-60 percent of Haryana's revenues. It is home to companies like Good Year, Indian Oil (R&D), Whirlpool, Havell's, L&T, and many more.
The CITY also boasts of 50,000+ small-scale industries, mostly in the mechanical and light engineering goods sector. Moreover, IT companies are also entering the CITY, for example, companies such as Damco Solutions and Abacus Softech.
Keshav Garg, a first-year student of Electronics and Communication Engineering at Manav Rachna College of Engineering (MRCE), a resident of Faridabad, says that for the engineering aspirants of Faridabad, the CITY is good, as it is home to quality institutions such as YMCA University.
Reiterating the same, Dr M K Soni, Executive Director, Faculty of Engineering & Technology, MRCE said that since Faridabad is a renowned industrial area, many engineering institutes have established their centres in the CITY, and more are coming.
"Gurgaon and Delhi is nearby, and now Palwal is also picking up as an industrial area, so Faridabad is emerging as one of the important cities for engineering students," Dr Soni added.
State: Haryana National Capital Region (NCR)
Distance: 30km. New Delhi to its north, 38 km. Gurgaon to the west
Climate: Summer up to 400C, Winter up to 02-200C
Journey time by road 1 hour to 2 hours from Delhi.
Faridabad is home to many reputed Universities offering undergraduate, and postgraduate courses, mainly in medical, engineering, and management.
Popular engineering institutes in the CITY are: Delhi Engineering College; NGF College of Engineering & Technology; Manav Rachna College of' Engineering (MRCE); YMCA University of Science & Technology.
Most of the CITY's colleges are affiliated to Muhirshi) Dayanand University (MDU), Rohtak.
Since Faridabad is in Haryana., the food is north-Indian and rich. However, the region has more vegetarian choices than non-vegetarian food options.
Faridabad is dotted with a number of small eateries.
Popular food items amongst the students are paranthas, puri chholay and fast food etc. Dosa Junction on Surajkund Road, chaat at Sector 16; Puri Sabji of Chaudhary Dhabe wala are quite popular.
Faridabad has both private as well as government hospitals, suiting all budgets. The CITY offers decent healthcare and a well-being ecosystem with hospitals like Metro Heart Care, Fortis, Asian, QRG, and several government hospitals.
However, for serious ailments, residents prefer Gurgaon or Delhi hospitals.
The NH-2 (Delhi-Mathura Road) passes through the CITY, and thus it is well connected to the nearby states.
Roadways services of Haryana (Haryana Roadways) and neighboring states like Delhi Transport Corporation, Uttar Pradesh Transport Department, and Madhya Pradesh Transport Department are easily accessible. However, the CITY roads are not in very good shape.
New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Stations are about 25 km away from Faridabad.
Trains for big cities are easily accessible from here. Local Trains run between New Delhi to Faridabad. There are three railway stations in the CITY -Faridabad, New 'Town Faridabad and Ballabgarh.
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is expected to extend the metro rail service to the CITY by end of 2014.
Delhi's Indira Gandhi International airport is only 26 kilometers away from Faridabad CITY center, which connects both national and international flights.
Close proximity to Delhi and Gurgaon is .an added advantage for Faridabad. "We at Manav Rachna feel the benefit of being located in the CITY, as we have easy access to all of the companies located nearby, hence the same helps in placements, training, workshop, etc too," said Dr. Soni.
But, Keshav begs to differ; he feels that being a student doesn't see many benefits of being in an industrial hub.
"With regular college, we do not get work in industries here, for part-time jobs in BPOs and for summer internships, we have to go to Gurgaon, 'he said.
The popular areas for students' paying guest facility (PG) hostels/and renting rooms are sector -15, Sector-16, and Sector-17.
Most of the engineering students prefer college hostels if they are not Faridabad residents.
“Girls of our college prefer to commute from their home, or live in college hostel as there are no many options of PG for girls, “said Dr. Soni.
The cost of living Index in Faridabad is lower than in Delhi or Gurgaon. For instance, the rentals for a single room set would be anywhere around Rs 4,000-Rs 5,000 monthly.
Moreover, if one moves towards a furnished room it would cost around Rs 8,000 to Rs.9,000 per month. Private hostels in Faridabad charge anywhere between Rs.3,000 – Rs. 8,000 for a room shared by two or more. Some PG facilities offer food, which is I charged separately.
For regular hangouts, the students of the CITY prefer Gurgaon and Delhi. Gurgaon is just half-an-hour away from the CITY.
"Malls and hangouts are not that happening here, we prefer Gurgaon, and Delhi for entertainment and hangouts," said Keshav.
For day trips, students go to Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary, Damdama (Lake), Fort Neemrana, Badkal Lake, etc.

Bangalore is a huge draw for IT majors as the engineering-focused CITY has the advantage of high-quality production centers with low-cost benefits.
Five years back when Prem Prakash Singh from Bihar came to do research in Bangalore, he was hesitant to talk in English, a language widely spoken in the CITY.
Gradually he came out of the shell, mingled with friends, and plunged into healthy interactions in English. Today, I Prem, doing a Ph.D. in NanoEngineering from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) is fluent in English." Bangalore gave me confidence and drastically improved my communication skills," he says. Unlike other southern cities, the language will not much be an issue in Bangalore.
You can easily move around with a bit of Hindi or English.
With a salubrious climate, Bangalore stands out as the second-highest student populated metropolis in India. "I chose Bangalore because of its brand value of being the Silicon Valley of India," says Mrudula Nair pursuing B. Tech in Telecommunications at M.S Ramaiah Institute of Technology (MSRIT) . Housing the largest number of software I companies, Bangalore is the ideal IT job destination in the country.

Bangalore is a top preferred CITY for engineering education. "This year out ofl040 students, we placed about 1000 students mostly in Bangalore-based I top-notch companies like INTEL, Info-I sys, Microsoft, Nokia, IBM and more," I inform Dr. S.Y Kulkarni, Principal of MSRIT. The amazing feature of the CITY is that it does not yearn for an IIT tag.
"Any engineering graduate easily gets a job in Bangalore. Some local companies may not give you a high salary compared to distinguished companies in the CITY," says Tintu Bhaskaran, Senior Engineer at Fanuc India Pvt. Ltd, the Indian subsidiary of a Japanese-based company, a pioneer in computer numerical control and robots.
The majority of employees are graduates of the CITY-based engineering colleges. "I came from Mumbai to pursue Computer Science aiming for a guaranteed IT job in Bangalore, "sharers Thyagarajan Iyer, student of MVJ College of Engineering. According to Iyer, the most popular course in his college in Computer Science, followed by Aeronautical Engineering, taught in just three colleges in the CITY.
The leading engineering colleges in Bangalore are IIIT, MSRIT, RV College of Engineering, PES University, BMS College of Engineering, Bangalore Institute of Technology, and JSS Academy of Technical Education. The two premier institutes -IISc (offering higher courses) and MSRIT are neighborhood colleges within a distance of 2 km. in a prime location called Mathikare, an industrial-cum-residential area.
Half a kilometer from the electronic CITY is PES Institute of Technology on Hosur road. It's the first campus on Bangalore's IT corridor.
Prakruti, the famous hangout inside IISc, offers juices, masala dosa, uttapam, milkshakes, samosas etc. Mud Pipe near Jain University is a cool hangout for sports enthusiasts. Students flock here to play snooker and grab some food. It is located on the J C road campus. Another place where most people stop by to have tea is at Muniswamy's mobile tea stall at M.G road. Tea lovers hover around the stall from midnight to early morning hours.
About 10 minutes from MSRIT to Malleshwaram, one could have affordable food at Dosa Hotel in the CTR region. In the same vicinity, Veena store sells the best idlis in town.
Other most familiar spots which draw the attention of student crowd is Sunny's at M.G road, and Ice & Spice at MSR Nagar popular for shakes, burgers, and pastas. North Indian students relish some paranthas at "Parantha Plaza "while gob Manchurian, dosa, idli and kesari bhath are the most popular dishes doled out all over Bangalore.
Whitefield is a good hangout for IT wizards for networking and expanding contacts. Close by at Information Technology Park Ltd. (ITPL) students stroll around for meeting IT professionals.
Bangalore is a costlier CITY compared to other metros like Kolkata, Chennai, and Hyderabad. Mrudula says, "I spend sensibly.
The CITY certainly pinches your pocket but it depends on how and where you spend." Her monthly expenses are around Rs. 5000. So the cost of living largely depends upon the way you lead your lifestyle. You can get meals from Rs. 20 to Rs. 2000in Bangalore.
Prem is blessed to be part of a public institute. "I get everything on subsidized rates on campus from academics, food to shelter," he reveals. He is content with his Ph.D. scholarship worth Rs. 24,000 per month.
Ask him about off-campus housing facilities, "Many of my friends s from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh reside in a residential area of Mathikere, much close to the campus. The rent ranges between Rs. 2000 to Rs. 4000."
According to Mrudula, the CITY is has a good transport system, comprising private and public bus services, autos, car cabs, metro rails.
Autos area bit expensive around Brigade Road and MG road. So students usually prefer buses, which are quite frequent. The only trouble being the routine traffic snarls during peak hours.
Known for its booming automobile industry, Chennai is equally good when it comes to Engineering courses
Chennai has a uniquely vibrant cultural heritage with a strong emphasis on education. It is also emerging as India's largest automotive manufacturing hub.
"Our institute is in close proximity to all leading companies. So VIT students regularly visit them for project work," shares Dr. C.P. Karthikeyan, Dean, School of Mechanical and Building Sciences (SMBS), VIT University Chennai Campus.
"We are located midway between Vandalur Zoo and Kelam-bakkam -a stretch of 19 km which cut I across over 40 prominent companies, "he added. The Chennai -Bangalore corridor opening in next few years, will provide splendid opportunities in the CITY.
Before landing in Chennai from Kuwait, I Agrim Prakash, an NRI student was very apprehensive about his decision to study here.
Agrim a final year B. Tech (Electronics & Communication) student at, SRM University shares his experience; i found South Indian values fascinating, The morning hymns from dozens of I temples refresh the mind and body. The CITY has educated people from all walks of life, goodnight life, yet safe."
Area: 181.1 sq. km
Average 320C, 54% humidity (late May to early June are hottest months’ January is the coolest)
Clothes: Light-colored cotton clothes preferred for summers as well as winters
Monsoon: June to September
Language: Tamil (English, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi are widely spoken)

Neeraj Kumar, hailing from Haryana's Fatehabad district was thrilled to join IIT Madras but got worried about the language and how to mingle with people.
Luckily life was easy for him, "It became quite easy to interact with people as most of them could speak English. I never felt alienated. The name boards on buses are written in both English and Tamil," says Neeraj, pursuing Chemical Engineering at IIT-Madras.
Two top public engineering colleges in Chennai, IIT Madras & College of Engineering (Anna University), Guindy are close neighbors at a distance of 4 km. Others are Saveetha University, SRM University, Vels University, Madras Institute of Technology, VIT Chennai.
A good hostel life gives a sense of independence. Take for instance Neeraj who concedes that 80 percent creative talent oozes out from the hostel.
"I have indulged in late-night brainstorming over ideas on various projects. The hostel life has a different vibrancy," he reveals.
The regular hangout spots vary from college to college. IIT-M has Student's Facility Centre bang opposite Narmada hostel. Amidst other shops, the Gurunath Departmental Store is the most popular. Students often pep-up their mood at CCD within and IRCTC canteen outside the campus.
Gautam Merwan, a Mechanical Engineering student at VIT Chennai compares his campus with VIT Vellore. "Vellore is on a dull obscure land and is lively only within the campus. On the contrary Chennai has a lot of life, both inside and outside.
You could easily catch a bus and buy anything from the market," he says. Major food spot at VIT Chennai is Gazebo (paranthas, rolls, chicken 65, momos). There are many Nescafe joints on campus, popularly called "Plants" by students.
When Prakash moved out of Chennai last month, Bangalore's standard of living pinched his pocket. "Chennai's is definitely lower compared to any other metro cities," he says. The cost of living in Chennai largely depends on the location and type of college. The government subsidies in public colleges are a big boon.
There, alongside subsidized canteens, the mess fee is much less than private colleges. It is around Rs.30,000 and Rs. 32,000 per annum at IIT-Mand COE respectively.
Darshan Shetty, an M.Tech CAD-CAM student from VIT University could not find a hostel seat. So he had to seek lodging at Kandigai, located 2 km from campus. He lives with four others in a 2-BHK apartment. The rent comes to Rs. 9000, which gets divided between
5 persons. Darshan pays Rs. 2000 inclusive of food and electriCITY. "The routine is fixed; turn by turn we all cook. We make rice as it is an easy affair plus we have a roti-maker as well," said Shetty.
Since autorickshaws are very expensive in Chennai, students prefer to travel by buses or local trains.
There are no AC buses at the suburban campus, so some students even have to travel by rickety old buses in the blazing heat. For long distances, students mostly prefer to take local trains. "Travelling by local trains' is the best option, as it is fast and saves money," says Darshan.
At Velacherry, the Phoenix mall attracts students in droves. Another popular mall in the CITY is Express Avenue, where students come to catch up on movies.
Close to IIT-M and COE, Guindy stands Anna Centenary Library, Asia's largest library.
Prakash often goes there as it offers a comfortable, spacious, breezy, and calm reading ambiance. It's a membership-free library where you are not allowed to take books out.
"The library is a cool option to beat scorching, heat, read books of your choice or prepare for exams," says Prakash. There is also the freedom to take books, laptops, and other materials inside the library.
